“For a man of honour, he fights mercilessly…” panted a voice, and a boy, a teenager, gasping for breath appeared, holding onto a close-by tree branch.
Turning around, he surveyed the dark area of this night, his pale, light blue eyes showing a mixture of fear and determination. He shook his head slightly, waving his long, but messy blonde hair, which had been thrown out of shape from the chase the boy had been involved in a moment ago, out of his face. Brushing it aside, he sighed.
Looks like I got more than I bargained for… he thought to himself.
He closed his eyes, and his heavy breathing slowed down. He listened to the noises around him, the silence and calm atmosphere of the forest, - no, the world. This boy, of calm feeling and careful attitude, was being followed. He was well aware of this, and also of the identity of his pursuers, who were in fact his own family. Only two of the four family members he had left behind during his escape were hunting him now - his brother and father.
There doesn’t seem to be anything. Wait - what was that? His eyes snapped open, and he squinted his eyes, staring through the pitch-black darkness of the night into the distance.
Dammit, I can’t make out what’s going on. he thought in desperation.
He braced himself, and soon enough, heard a noise, which soon became two noises. One was of water, somewhere below him, but not close enough yet to cause any panic. The other was a sound directly ahead of him, in the trees. He realised this since the sound was of leaves being parted, perhaps forcefully. This meant his pursuers were catching up to him, and attempting to fool him into running into a trap - whether he ran across the trees or on the ground, someone would find him.
Releasing his grip on the tree branch, he dashed through the trees once again, swiping aside the seemingly endless flow of leaves in front of him.
Crap! They’re close… At least, one of them is. I bet it’s my brother. He’s the swift one. the boy wondered, looking down at the rain-soaked ground below him. The sound of splashing puddles nearby was obvious, and this only led to increase his fear. Soon enough, the sound grew much louder, more frequent, and the one making the noise soon came into the boy’s view. Below him, on the ground was another teenager, similar in appearance, except for his striking dark blue hair, and the fact that he was taller-looking. Upon seeing the boy running across the trees above, the teen smirked and called to him:
“Get back here, lil bro, dad wants to have a word with you!”
Turning his head slightly, the boy yelled back.
“Shut it! I’ve had it with you selfish fools! Leave me alone!”
At that, he fastened his pace, making his way across the branches as swiftly and cautiously as he could. The teen below him didn’t seem to want to give chase; instead he remained stationary, with the smirk still across his face.
“Too bad! I have permission to break you, kiddo.”
He then yelled an incantation to the wind, and the puddles around him formed themselves into small daggers, and a second later, hurled themselves towards the boy.
What? He’s allowed to use Mizu Daggers against me?! the boy thought in disbelief, and just barely swerved to the side to avoid the attack. However, his hasty movement had cost him his safety, too, as his hand missed the next branch, and he soon plummeted to the ground below. Quickly thinking, the boy closed his eyes and focused on an incantation of his own.
“Quickwind!” he shouted, and a sphere of air began to whip up around him, drawing leaves into the fray as well.
After performing this spell, the boy dashed off, now at a much faster pace, thanks to his Wind spell, and made his way far away from his now infuriated brother.
“Lucky little… Father! Change of plans! You’re gonna have to catch him now!” he called, looking above into the trees.
About three seconds after saying this, a blur passed him, much too fast for the human eye to see.
Dad’s determined to catch him. There’s no way he can outrun Father. he thought.
After what seemed like forever, the boy stopped moving, and sat down in the shadow of a tree. He again gasped for breath, and he was in need of rest.
What the hell am I going to do? That idiot father of mine will catch up with me sooner or later… he thought to himself.
“Or perhaps he has already caught up with you.” a voice boomed out of the darkness.
The boy leapt in surprise, looking above him to see his red-haired, familiar blue-eyed father standing proudly on a tree branch, with his arms folded, and an expressionless face.
“You actually expected to get away? I’m the most powerful Mahoutsukai from our country.” he announced, retaining his serious and powerful tone. “Now, why did you leave?”
A look of anger and utter hatred took over the boy’s face.
“I’ll tell you why, you damn pathetic excuse for a father! You, and everyone else, treat me like dirt! No, you all think I’m a soldier, and have to perfect for your stupid little fights!” He yelled at his father.
“Hm? I believe I didn’t give you permission to talk to me like that.” replied the father.
“Enough! You keep talking like that, you smartass! You’re not superior!” the boy cried at him, and then repeated what he had said previously to his brother. “Leave me alone!”
He turned away, but as he prepared to run away again, his father’s expression changed to a menacing glare, and within a second, he leapt at his son, ready to attack him.
The boy turned around, but only in time to see his father’s fist collide with his face, knocking him to the ground. Blood running off of his face, the boy lifted himself to his feet again.
“I… won’t lose… to you!!!” he shouted at his father, and punched the ground, causing a huge pillar of stone to rise quickly and launch itself at him.
The father dodged with ease, jumping onto the earth pillar. He then closed his eyes for a moment, opening them again and calling:
“Spell Control Diversion!”
The pillar then shattered to pieces, and then hurled themselves towards the boy, who was now seizing the opportunity to make his next, and final escape.
I knew he’d control it. But, in doing that, I had a chance to run for it. the boy thought to himself, taking a quick turn to the side, and in turn avoided the rain of stones behind him. Looking to his right, the boy dashed away again, soon arriving at a clearing, where, not too far ahead of him, was a huge structure.
That place… What is it? he thought, staring at the rather magnificent building. That wasn’t there before…
Without a second thought, he decided it was better to run for the building, rather than face the menacing father close in pursuit of him.
Casting his Quickwind spell on himself again, the boy managed to arrive at the grand twin doors of the structure. To his amazed and excited surprise, there was an opening; a door had been left open. As if responding to a miracle, the boy leaped through the door, shutting it behind him.
Breathing a sigh of relief, he sat down on what seemed to be a cold, hard marble floor.
I can’t believe it… I actually got away. He thought to himself.
He smiled, and began to laugh a little, and soon, his eyes closed, and he drifted off into a peaceful sleep.
Soon after the boy’s escape, the father stood in the clearing where he had seen his son a moment before.
Where is he? He vanished! he thought, astounded.
"Damn him!!!" he yelled into the night sky, kicking at the ground.
Incredibly enough, the castle that the boy had retreated into could not be seen by his father…
